Chuck Connelly

After viewing Chuck Connelly’s painting, Autumn, and a few others, in the privacy of a friends personal art collection, his style resonated with me.  These pieces truly need to be viewed in person (the sizes of the images above do not suffice) to appreciate his overpowering texture and abstraction; this distinctive and consistant style is what intrigued me to look further.  You can view more of his pieces on his website at http://chuckconnelly.net/.

Turns out, Connelly has been an alcoholic for many years, which has greatly affected his business and personal life.  His dramatic history even incentivized HBO to create a documentary on Connelly, The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly, Not For Sale, to portray the rise and fall of his career.  The documentary greatly highlights the low points of his career; Connelly almost completely alienated himself in the art world due to his unstable personality and went as far as hiring an actor to pose as a young, upcoming artist to sell his work to galleries. French Creative, JR, traveled to Havana to collaborate with Brookyln-based Cuban-American artist, José Parlá, on a project they titled Wrinkles of the City.  Together the two  artists photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens that had lived through the Cuban Revolution to create these huge mural installations throughout Havana, Cuba.  The photo’s of those interviewed were wheat pasted onto distressed facades around the city, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings, the murals greatly animate a city that is otherwise adorned by images of the countries leaders.  This project not only celebrates the lives of those portrayed but pays hommage to the strength of the Cuban community, and their history.  To check out the rest of their project you can purchase the Wrinkles of the City book available exclusively through The Standard Press at http://standardhotels.myshopify.com/products/wrinkles-of-the-city-havana-cuba while its still available.
